John Baldessari is an American conceptual artist known for his work featuring found photography and appropriated images. He was born in 1931 in National City, California. He currently lives and works in Santa Monica and Venice, California.
early life and education
He attended San Diego State University and did post-graduate work at Otis Art Institute, Chouinard Art Institute and the University of California at Berkeley.
Baldessari started as a painter and then began to incorporate texts and photography into his canvases in the mid-1960s. In 1970 he began working in printmaking, film, video, installation, sculpture and photography
In 1959, Baldessari began teaching art in the San Diego school system. He taught at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA from 1970 – 1988 and the University of California at Los Angeles from 1996 – 2007.
